How to Make Bottle Bird Feeders

How to Make Bottle Bird Feeders. Making a plastic bottle bird feeder is inexpensive and an engaging project for kids. When you make a bird feeder out of a plastic bottle, you are also helping the environment by taking something that would otherwise be thrown away and turning it into something useful. You probably already have the things you need to create a bottle bird feeder.

Making bird feeders out of plastic bottles helps the environment.

Things Needed

  • Plastic bottle, 2 liters
  • Towel
  • Sharp knife or scissors
  • String, 20 inches long
  • Bird seed
  • Chopstick

Step 1

Wash the plastic bottle and remove the outer labels. Dry the bottle with a towel.

Step 2

Poke two small holes in the bottom of the plastic bottle with either scissors or a knife.

Step 3

Thread a piece of string through the holes to make a hanger for the feeder. Tie the ends together in a knot to make a loop.

Step 4

Use scissors or a knife to poke two additional holes on opposite sides of the bottle, about 3 inches away from the cap. The holes should be large enough in diameter for a chopstick to fit through.

Step 5

Insert the chopstick into one hole and out the other hole on the opposite side. This is the perch for the birds.

Step 6

Cut out two feeding holes with the scissors or a knife on opposite sides of the bottle, just above the chopsticks. The holes should be one third of an inch in size.

Step 7

Open the cap and fill the bottle halfway with birdseed. Replace the cap.

Step 8

Hang the bottle from a tree limb.

Warnings

  • Be careful using knives and scissors around children.
