Maintaining Natural Healthy Dog Teeth

Good canine dental health is necessary in order to avoid tartar and plaque build up which can affect, not only oral health, but the overall health of the dog too. Dogs fed a good diet and provided with good oral hygiene have fresher breath. Regular care is required to maintain natural healthy dog teeth.

A dog's digestive system is designed to digest meat; even though we do not see packs of dogs hunting deer anymore, it doesn't mean that their needs have changed. The problem with Kibble and canned food is that they do not provide all of a dog's dietary requirements. Worst of all, they can leave small bits of food behind in the mouth which, if not removed, can turn into plaque and tartar and therefore doesn't allow for natural healthy teeth to be maintained.

Keeping dog teeth healthy naturally is the best form of dental care. This is best dealt with through the right diet. Even among humans, some foods can cause damage to teeth but dogs historically don't have access to dentists to deal with tooth decay.

Chewing bones is a natural cleaning process for a dog's mouth, bones are a natural way of helping scrape tartar and plaque from the teeth. If done on a regular basis, there would be no need of a doggie tooth brush, vet visits and toothpaste.

A dog's urge to chew is often resolved by the use of recreational bones such as stag antlers. These are often difficult to eat. Real bones, cooked or raw, that have plenty of meat around them may be more suited to a dog's needs. The gnawing action against tendons adds to the chewing process improving the tooth cleansing process.

Some expert advice recommends chicken and turkey necks whilst others recommend large beef bones. Knuckle bones and other bones are easily purchased from the majority of grocery stores.

The important point here is that the dog needs to be fed with appropriate bones. Small bones like chicken wings need to be avoided. This is because dogs are likely to gulp down the chicken wing rather than chew on it. This can result in the food being caught while going down and may lead to choking. Tailor the size of the bone to the size of the dog. An easy way to obtain such bones is to ask any friends or acquaintances who go hunting for unwanted deer bones.

Natural healthy dog teeth do need good dental care. However, natural care can end oral issues and eliminate the need for veterinary checkups. It is important to avoid tartar and plaque build-up as the bacteria can enter the blood stream and cause harm to internal organs such as the heart and kidneys.
