Essential Steps That Are Needed For Leash Training A Dog

When you own a dog, one of the most essential things you must do is to teach them how to behave when they are on a leash. Many people hesitate leash training a dog because they assume that it will be hard to train their dog and they do not understand the steps required to do it right.

Training a dog on a leash is not difficult to do at all and after you understand the steps needed to do it right it will be easy for you.

The first step is to get your dog used to wearing a collar, if they do not already have one. The collar is vital for them to wear because without it you will not have anywhere to hook the leash to.

So spend some time getting them used to wearing their collar before you put a leash on them.

The second step is to show your pet that you are the alpha dog and they must follow your commands. This is accomplished with verbal commands from you when he is on the leash. Just be sure you use the same commands and training each time you put them on the leash so it will be easier for them to understand what behavior you expect them do to.

As you begin to walk with your dog on the leash, be sure to make sure the leash is short so that the dog stays by your side when you walk. If the dog starts pulling or running ahead, stop right away in place and give them the command to lay down or sit.

If they listen to your command, then give them praise for listening to your verbal command. Then you want to take a few steps back and begin walking again.

Every time your dog pulls or runs ahead, repeat this process. Soon the dog will learn that every time they do this it is going to stop their walk and exploring, which is not what any dog likes.

You can take treats with you on your walks and give them to your dog each time they give you the behavior you are after from them. With time and more training, you want to be sure though that you increase the time frame in between each treat so that they eventually get to the point where they are well behaved on the leash every time without the need for a treat.

Leash training a dog is as simple as that, but it is going to require time, persistence, consistency and patience from you to teach them how they are expected to behave when on the leash. Each dog can learn this, if you just give them time and repeat the training until they do know and give you the behavior you want each time they go for a walk or are put on a leash.
