How to House-Train an Adult Dog

How to House-Train an Adult Dog. They say you cannot teach an old dog new tricks, but house-training an adult dog is possible. House-training at any age takes patience and understanding, but since older dogs have better control of their bodily functions, they are often easier to train than puppies.

You can house-train your adult dog.

Things Needed

  • Leash
  • Treats

Step 1

Take your dog to the vet to ensure she is in good health and rule out any medical reasons for soiling in the house.

Step 2

Set a feeding schedule. This makes it easier to make sure she is taken outdoors when she needs to use the bathroom. Leaving food and water around at all times means that there is no way to know when she will need to go.

Step 3

Take her outdoors to a designated bathroom spot at least every two hours. Give her plenty of time and tell her to go potty in a calm voice. Use lots of praise and give her a treat when she does use the bathroom outside.

Step 4

Watch her carefully while indoors. If she attempts to eliminate indoors, say, "No" in a stern tone and take her to her outdoor bathroom area immediately. Contain her in a crate or small room while you are away from home to contain any mess she may make.

Warnings

  • Be patient. House-training does not happen overnight, and getting frustrated and stopping to start again later will only confuse your dog. Punishment for mistakes is similarly ineffective.
