Improving the Lives of Homeless Pets

Thousands of homeless and abandoned pets reside in shelters and rescue organizations. Caring for these animals is a rewarding but undoubtedly challenging task. Here are just a few ways that you can help to improve the lives of these animals.

The most obvious way to help is to make a financial donation. Although Christmas is a natural time for many people to donate, shelters and rescues need donations throughout the year.

You can also volunteer your time. Shelters and rescues are always in need of volunteers to help with daily operations. This can include things like:
   * Fundraising
   * Education
   * Adoption / lost & found
   * Animal care
   * Office work
   * Dog walking
   * Enrichment programs for other pets like cats.

Donate items that the shelter needs. This can include items for the animals (dishes, toys, blankets, etc) or items used in the running of the shelter (office supplies or equipment). Note that many shelters will not accept opened bags or containers of food or treats. Others may request certain types of food to help them offer their pets a consistent diet.

Ask the shelter if they accept donations of reward points such as Canadian Tire dollars or HBC points that they can use to replenish their supplies.

Collect old towels and blankets from your friends and neighbours, launder them, and then donate them to your local humane society. Towels and blankets give the animals in the shelter something soft and comfy to snuggle up with.

Become a foster parent. Many animals enter the shelter or rescue organization that need a little extra care. Sometimes it's a mother dog and their litter of babies that need more time to grow before they can be put up for adoption. Other times it's an injured animal that needs time to heal. Or perhaps you may find yourself fostering an animal that's timid or that has been neglected, and needs a loving and patient hand to give him confidence before he finds a permanent home.

Adopt! If your family and lifestyle are able and willing to welcome another animal companion, then head out to visit with the pets who need homes. Your new family member may be there waiting for you! family - pets included!
