Although, most of us try to accommodate our pets whenever there is a disruption to the normal daily routine, and this could be a holiday or weekend away for example, there does come a time when the pooch has to be left behind in the hands of the professionals so that we can have some free time. These places are run on business lines, naturally, but they do have to have the interest of the pet in mind in their daily routines. These places sometimes offer much more than bed and board and, if the owner so wishes, the pet can be trained out of, or into, different behavior than it is exhibiting at home. This is great for those who are literally unable to admonish the pet when it is jumping on visitors or begging at the table etc since the pet is often seen as another child in the family. However, the owner too should be prepared for some training when they come to pick up the pet at the end of the stay!

People also use this opportunity to socialize the pet particularly if it lives in town. Rarely will it get the chance to do what other pets do if there is no green area close by. Every day, and perhaps more than once, they will be taken out en masse to enjoy exploring their surrounding with abandon.

This kind of behavioral expedition will tell the trainers a lot about the pet. If it hangs back or is nervous, the trainer will encourage it to join in. If it is over exuberant and bullies the others, it will be restrained and trained into more socially acceptable behavior. Either way, the behavior will be modified to an extent that the pet learns what is, and what is not, acceptable at home too.

These facilities must always be clean, of course, since the pet should not return home with something like kennel cough or something similar. Checking them out before handing them the family pet then is important so that the cleanliness of the place can be monitored. It is a business, obviously, but this does not mean that the pet should not be cared for in a professional and loving manner. Anything less than this would be like sending the kids to some summer school out of the dark ages. Not acceptable on any count. Choosing a facility then is perhaps one of those things that people should take some time over. Visit several times to see the daily routines in motion, and take a look at the pets already there. Do they look happy and exuberant? Do they look like they are in prison? Just watching animal behavior should give some insight into whether this is the right place or not.
