Poop Bags For Dog DNA Registrants

2016/5/4 10:24:08

As the pet dog population continues to increase around the world, the need for poop bags and a dog bag to carry those dog poop bags will also increase. In the U.S alone, 10.9 million tons of dog waste is plopped on the landscape annually. Current estimates indicate that only about half of it is cleaned up. The rest remains lying there, harming our environment, our health and the health of other animals, our shoes and our homes. Major initiatives are currently underway to catch the poop scofflaws. DNA registration of dogs has begun.

Fines for failing to pick up dog waste are increasing everywhere. Although London had the highest fine at $700, it is quickly being surpassed by other communities. Lafayette, Colorado could fine the offender $1000 and Hoboken, New Jersey is demanding even more. But the real problem is catching the pet owner who fails to use dog poop bags to pick up after their companion. This is where the new detective method -- DNA registration of dogs -- has come to the rescue.

*New Way of Finding Those Who Fail To Pick Up Dog Poop

DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid. DNA is the hereditary material present in humans and all other animals. Every cell in an animal has the same DNA, and it is specific to that particular animal. No one is alike. Thus, DNA is used to identify the animal.

The American Kennel Club and American Dog Breeders Association have provided DNA profiling of dogs for many years. They have used it for breeders who are interested in using DNA to eliminate concerns or questions about both identification and parentage. Drawing blood samples from dogs or simply sending the lab a swab of the pet's saliva is all that is needed to determine their DNA. DNA certification adds immense value to breeding programs and can also be used to identify a missing pet. Since DNA is also present in dog poop, entirely new uses for registration have now arrived.

Un-scooped dog waste that is not picked up with poop bags carried in a dog bag has become a nuisance around the world. Many condominium associations and apartment complexes have decided to ban pets. Others have added video cameras, but this costs money. Some have added the DNA testing to their purchase or rental agreements for those who have pets. They feel that the DNA solution means that only the dog owners need to spend money on the problem. Some associations actually publish the identity of the guilty pet owner who fails to pick up dog waste in the association newsletter. Most will fine the offender -- some as much as $500 per occurrence.

Many businesses are popping up that offer a variety of ways that homeowner associations and apartment complexes can institute this DNA program. They are not only promoting their services to apartment complexes and condominium associations. They are also moving into communities and neighborhoods. The days of the poop scofflaws are numbered.

*Capri Plans To Be Free of Dog Waste

Some communities are already envisioning success with the DNA program. The tiny island of Capri is an Italian summer destination for the super-wealthy. It has enacted this new plan to bust irresponsible pet owners. Capri mayor Ciro Lembo asked, "Do you really think we will let the reputation of the island whose beauty is coveted by the world be compromised by bodily needs left in the streets by inattentive or arrogant dog owners?"

This island in the Gulf of Naples in western Italy hosts a population of 6000 humans and 1000 dogs. Something needed to be done to keep the island clean.

Blood samples for each dog are still being collected to register their DNA. Beginning in June, local government workers will locate the dog feces left lying and then call the police, who will send a sample of the dog poop to the laboratory. DNA will be extracted from the specimen and compared with the results of the blood samples. And the dog owner who didn't use dog poop bags will then be fined 2,000 Euros. This is $2,651 in US dollars.

Lembo claims that this is not only about preserving the pristine beauty of Capri. It is also a matter of public health and concern for the residents. Dog waste carries diseases. In addition, eliminating stools left on the sidewalks and streets will keep residents safe from bruising and broken bones. Or maybe keep a pair of expensive Prada shoes out of the trash can.

"In the past, there have been unpleasant episodes, like tourists slipping and hurting themsleves", claimed Lembo. "But there have also been unfortunate cases when the victim didn't get hurt, but had to throw away some spoiled clothes."

*Spain Already Catches Those Who Don't Use Poop Bags

San Sebastian, Spain has also enacted the same DNA database of dogs to track down owners who fail to pick up dog feces. The Spanish Town Council enacted a law where all dog owners must register their dog's DNA. All feces left lying around the town will be collected and the dog dna test done on it to determine which dog it came from. The fine is less, though. It is 300 Euros or $433 in US dollars. This too, will probably continue to increase in the years ahead.

As these new methods to catch and then fine those who fail to pick up dog poop increase, the world will benefit. The most obvious benefit to any community, apartment complex or neighborhood is simply a cleaner, dog waste free environment. Using poop bags and a dog bag to carry those bags will soon become the normal responsibility for all those who own dogs.
