Tips and Advice on Dog Training

As a dog owner, you are aware that every dog needs some training. Dogs have a tendency to display bad behavior. There are many reasons why this happens. It may stem from separation anxiety or a lack of communication. Dogs do not purposely mean to misbehave; they just simply may not know exactly what is expected of them. Communication is the biggest key in dog training. Your dog needs to understand what you want him to do or not do. In order to accomplish this communication, you and your dog need to undergo some dog training steps.

One of the first things that you want to know is why you need to start dog training. Are you simply wanting him to learn something new or are there some behavior issues that need to be corrected? If you need training to correct bad behavior, then it can also be beneficial to understand why your dog is acting the way that he is.

Once you have this knowledge you can proceed to go further in the training. Communication between you and your dog is the next step. Your dog needs to know and understand exactly what you expect from him. This does not mean to yell at your dog, but to talk to him in calm tones and maybe even show him what you want him to do.

Letting your dog know who is in charge is also very important. This does mean to be aggressive towards your dog, but be firm. He needs to know that you will not tolerate bad behavior and that he will not get recognition for it.

Remember to reward your dog when he does display desirable behavior. This is always a good incentive to repeat the behavior. Do not reward him when he displays bad behavior. When he does this, explain to him what he did wrong and acknowledge that there is no reward for that type of behavior.

Show your dog attention. One of the most common reasons for these displays of bad behavior is a lack of attention. A dog needs to be loved and have interaction with their owner. They will do anything to get this attention, even misbehaving. When this happens do not show him any attention at all. Simply ignore him and he will eventually stop. When he does stop reward him for stopping but let him know that that type of behavior is not acceptable.

Never punish your dog. Punishing your dog can often times have a negative impact, resulting in the dog turning on you as well as make them more aggressive in the long run. This is not helping the situation so try to avoid it at all costs.

It is important to remember that your dog is just a dog. He is not human and does not understand things as easily as humans do. Be patient with him and you will get the results that you desire. Reward him for being good and ignore him for being bad, but most importantly always show your dog plenty of attention and affection. This will get you the most results in the quickest amount of time.
