The Black and Tan Coonhound, is a distinctive, athletically built dog that excels at hunting and tracking.

These medium-sized dogs stand up to 27 inches at the withers and can weigh as much as 75 pounds. They have a black and tan coat and the appearance of a typical hound dog, with long, hanging ears, loose fitting skin and long legs.

The original Black and Tans were created by crossing Talbot Hounds, Foxhounds, and Bloodhounds. The idea was to create a dog for treeing racoons, but the Black and Tan proved such an able tracker that it was soon being used to hunt larger game, including deer, mountain lions, and even bear.

These are loyal, affectionate and good-natured dogs who form close bonds with humans. The are also intelligent and fast learners which makes them excellent pets for an appropriate owner.

You should be aware though that this dog has very high exercise needs and is likely to develop destructive behavioral problems if not exercised enough. This dog will do best with someone who spends a lot of time outdoors and is prepared to include the dog in lots of activities. Black and Tans are prone to separation anxiety, and they will often howl if left alone.

Consistent pack leadership is a must with this breed, as are training and socialization. Dogs that have not been socialized may be aggressive towards other dogs. The hunting instinct is still strong, and these dogs will follow any scent they encounter.

While generally good with kids, you'll have to watch these dogs around small children. Not that they're aggressive, but their boisterous play can easily knock a child over. With the right amount of exercise though, plus a good training program, this is a wonderful pet and loving companion.

This is a healthy dog breed with few of the dread diseases that are often found in purebred dogs. Hip displaysia is known to occur, while the long ears are prone to infections and the dog may also suffer eye problems, like cataracts or progressive retinal atrophy.

Black and Tans love to eat and are therefore prone to obesity. Strict portion and treat control is therefore advised.

Grooming is quite easy as the short coat only needs to be brushed once a week. You should also take care to inspect and clean the ears and eyes regularly.

Black and tans are active dogs and not really suited to apartment living. They do best with an active lifestyle and plenty of room to move around. They are a hardy breed and quite capable of staying outdoors in all weathers, although they do prefer being close to their family.
