The Airedale Terrier (also known as the "King of Terriers") is a terrier breed of dog. They feature a square head and curly black and tan coat. The breed first appeared in the mid-19th century. They were originally bred for hunting a variety of game. These days they are popular as a police dog, for hunting, competitive agility or companionship. They can be recognized by their sense of adventure and sheer size as a terrier. They are thought to originate from Airedale in England and are a descendant of the Otterhound and Welsh Terrier.

They are classified as a large sized dog. The recommended male size is 23 inches high with a weight of 50-70 pounds, while the female size is 22 inches high with a weight of 45-70 pounds. Their temperament is well-known to be bold, adventurous and sometimes dominating. They are typically friendly with strangers, and this makes them unsuitable as a guard dog. The breed is known to be quite intelligent, and ranks 29th compared to all other breeds when learning new obedience instructions.

They are not the best (due to their high energy) with children, which can make them not very suitable as a family pet. They don't get along well with other animals such as other dogs they may become aggressive with. Grooming them is a pretty demanding task. They need occasional brushing every week, and full grooming every 6 to 8 weeks. They enjoy having a medium to large yard to run around in, but won't be suitable for apartment life.

Like most large sized breeds, they are primarily slightly shorter-lived with a life expectancy of 10-13 years. Their most severe health concern is hip dysplasia, and they are also susceptible to bloat, skin allergies and dry skin. They enjoy hobbies like running, playing games, agility and swimming. They have a high level of energy, which means they need long walks each day to prevent destructive behavior.

If you own the Airedale Terrier you need to be prepared to meet their needs for exercise and leadership. They are less suitable for families with young children, but highly suitable for active owners or families with older children. One of the best things about this breed is that it has a high level of intelligence and versatility which means it can adapt to any number of situations.
