The Bull Terrier (also known as the "Bullie" or "Gladiator") is a terrier breed of dog. They feature an egg-shaped head, triangular eyes and a coat that's usually white. The breed first appeared in the early 1800s. They were originally bred for bull baiting and dog fighting. These days they are popular as a companion for active owners. They can be recognized by their imposing appearance and high energy level. They are thought to originate from England and are a descendant of the Bulldog, Dalmatian and various other terriers.

They are classified as a medium sized dog. The recommended male and female size is 21-22 inches high with a weight of 50-70 pounds. Their temperament is well-known to be playful, mischievous and sometimes aggressive. They are typically accommodating with strangers, but their protectiveness of their family makes them suitable as a guard dog. The breed is known to be not highly intelligent, and ranks 66th compared to all other breeds when learning new obedience instructions.

They are too energetic with children, which can make them not very suitable as a family pet. They don't get along well with other animals such as cats, rabbits, guinea pigs or other dogs. Grooming them is a simple task. They need occasional brushing every week or two, and full grooming every 6 weeks. They enjoy having a small yard to run around in, but can be suitable for apartment life.

Like most medium sized breeds, they are primarily longer-lived with a life expectancy of 11-14 years. Their most severe health concern is deafness, and they are also susceptible to skin allergies or heart defects. They enjoy hobbies like daily mental stimulation, running or clowning around. They have a high level of energy, which means they need long walks each day to prevent destructive behavior.

If you own the Bull Terrier you need to be prepared to be their firm pack leader and keep them as your only pet. They are less suitable for multiple pet households, but highly suitable for active owners that can meet their high demands for guidance and exercise. One of the best things about this breed is that it is an imposing looking breed of dog that is playful with their owner.
