Basic Things You Should Know About The Norfolk Terrier

The Norfolk Terrier (also known as the Norwich Terrier as at one stage they were the same breed) is a terrier breed of dog. They feature short ears and a wiry coat that comes in several colors. The breed first appeared in the early 1900s. They were originally bred for hunting rats. These days they are popular as a companion for families or allergy sufferers. They can be recognized by their bold manner and love of children. They are thought to originate from England and are a descendant of English and Irish terrier breeds.

They are classified as a small sized dog. The recommended male and female size is 9-10 inches high with a weight of 11-12 pounds. Their temperament is well-known to be bold, loyal and often stubborn. They are typically friendly with strangers, and this makes them unsuitable as a guard dog. The breed is known to be fairly intelligent, and ranks equal 56th compared to all other breeds when learning new obedience instructions.

They are good with children, which can make them suitable as a family pet. They do get along well with other animals such as other dogs and cats (but not smaller animals like mice or birds). Grooming them is a simple task. They need a small amount of brushing every few days, and full grooming every 6 to 8 weeks. They enjoy having a small (but doesn't always need one) yard to run around in, but can easily be suitable for apartment life.

Like most small sized breeds, they are primarily long-lived with a life expectancy of 12-15 years. Their most severe health concern is heart problems, and they are also susceptible to breathing problems and epilepsy. They enjoy hobbies like running around or playing fetch. They have a high level of energy, which means they need moderate walks each day to prevent destructive behavior.

If you own the Norfolk Terrier you need to be prepared to give them plenty of attention and spend time training. They are less suitable for owners with smaller animals, but highly suitable for active owners, families or allergy sufferers. One of the best things about this breed is that it is a characteristically friendly terrier that is good towards kids and guests.
