The Miniature Schnauzer (also known as just the Schnauzer) is a terrier breed of dog. They feature a distinct beard, bushy eyebrows and wiry coat. The breed first appeared in the late 1800s. They were originally bred for catching rats in homes and barns. These days they are popular as a companion dog for singles and families. They can be recognized by their bold and affectionate character. They are thought to originate from Germany and are a descendant of the Standard Schnauzer, Affenpinscher and Poodle.

They are classified as a small sized dog. The recommended male size is 12-14 inches high with a weight of 13-20 pounds. Their temperament is well-known to be alert, playful and sometimes stubborn. They are typically friendlier than their larger counterpart with strangers, and this makes them unsuitable as a guard dog. The breed is known to be extremely intelligent, and ranks 12th compared to all other breeds when learning new obedience instructions.

They are good with children, which can make them suitable as a family pet. They do get along well with other animals such as other dogs if they're socialized early. Grooming them is a reasonably easy task. They need regular brushing every week, and full grooming every 6 to 8 weeks. They enjoy having a small (though doesn't always need one) yard to run around in, but can easily be suitable for apartment life.

Like most small sized breeds, they are primarily long-lived with a life expectancy of 12-14 years. Their most severe health concern is eye problems like cataracts or PRA, and they are also susceptible to liver diseases, diabetes, allergies, skin disorders and urinary infections. They enjoy hobbies like playing fetch or running around. They have a fairly high level of energy, which means they need short walks each day to prevent destructive behavior.

If you own the Miniature Schnauzer you need to be prepared to spend a lot of time with them. They are less suitable for a guard dog, but highly suitable for almost anyone with time to look after a dog. One of the best things about this breed is that it is the most popular terrier in the world for its friendly and affectionate nature as well as their lovable appearance.
