The Shih Tzu (also known as the "lion dog") is a toy breed of dog. They feature a non-shedding coat that comes in many colors. The breed first appeared in the 17th century with origins as old as 10,000 years. They were originally bred for providing companionship to the Chinese royal family. These days they are popular as a companion dog for apartment dwellers or allergy sufferers. They can be recognized by their playful and affectionate nature plus their hypoallergenic coat. They are thought to originate from China and are a descendant of unknown Tibetan breeds, the Lhasa Apso and Pekingese.

They are classified as a small sized dog. The recommended male and female size is 8-11 inches high with a weight of 9-16 pounds. Their temperament is well-known to be playful and affectionate though sometimes stubborn. They are typically trusting with strangers, and this plus their small size makes them unsuitable as a guard dog. The breed is known to be not highly intelligent, and ranks 70th compared to all other breeds when learning new obedience instructions.

They are playful with children, which can make them somewhat suitable as a family pet. They do get along well with other animals such as other dogs and cats. Grooming them is a demanding task. They need regular brushing every day, and full grooming every 2-3 weeks. They enjoy having a small yard to run around in, but can be suitable for apartment life.

Like most small sized breeds, they are primarily longer-lived with a life expectancy of 10-15 years. Their most severe health concern is IVD, and they are also susceptible to hip dysplasia, eye problems or breathing difficulties. They enjoy hobbies like playing with a toy or running in the park. They have a low to medium level of energy, which means they need short walks each day to prevent destructive behavior.

If you own the Shih Tzu you need to be prepared to spend a lot of time grooming and give them lots of attention. They are less suitable for people with boisterous children, but highly suitable for families with older children or seniors. One of the best things about this breed is that it has a lion-like appearance and affectionate temperament that makes it easy to love plus is also hypoallergenic.
