Basic Things You Should Know About The Tibetan Terrier

The Tibetan Terrier (also known as the "Tsang Apso") is a non-sporting breed of dog. They feature a shaggy coat that comes in almost any color. The breed first appeared in Tibet about 2,000 years ago. They were originally bred for providing companionship or acting as good luck charms. These days they are popular as a companion for families with older children. They can be recognized by their sensitive nature and low-shedding shaggy coat. They are thought to originate from Tibetan monasteries and are a descendant of unknown dogs that are among the most ancient of all breeds.

They are classified as a small to medium sized dog. The recommended size is 14-17 inches high with a weight of 18-30 pounds. Their temperament is well-known to be sensitive, devoted and independent. They are typically reserved with strangers, but their size makes them unsuitable as a guard dog. The breed is known to be fairly intelligent, and ranks 62nd compared to all other breeds when learning new obedience instructions.

They are good with children, which can make them somewhat suitable (if the kids are older) as a family pet. They do get along well with other animals such as other dogs they are raised with. Grooming them is a time consuming task. They need moderate brushing every couple of days, and full grooming every 6 to 8 weeks. They enjoy having a small yard to run around in, but can be suitable for apartment life.

Like most small to medium sized breeds, they are primarily longer-lived with a life expectancy of 12-15 years. Their most severe health concern is eye problems, and they are also susceptible to hip dysplasia or allergies. They enjoy hobbies like agility, running or even herding. They have a moderate level of energy, which means they need short walks each day to prevent destructive behavior.

If you own the Tibetan Terrier you need to be prepared to spend time socializing them properly and give them lots of attention. They are less suitable for families with younger children, but highly suitable for families with older children or allergy sufferers. Here are a few things you'll love about the Tibetan Terrier:

1. One of the best things about this breed is that it has a lovable appearance and temperament.

2. Another good thing about them is their long shaggy coat actually sheds very little and makes them suitable for allergy sufferers.

3. Another good thing about them is they were once kept as good luck charms and having one in your family can't be a bad thing.
