How to Implement a Flea and Tick Control Program

Getting a good tick and flea product for dogs would be a good start for eradicating ticks and fleas. Most of the time though you need to use the tick and flea product for dogs in combination with another tick and flea product for dogs to successfully get rid of the ticks and fleas in your dog. But since your dogs get the ticks, fleas and other parasites in the areas they frequent you should also apply tick and flea control on your yard as well as inside your home too.

Choose Appropriate Flea Product for Dogs

When you see your dog scratching, it is a sign that your pet has some ticks and fleas. You should get the most appropriate tick and flea product for dogs to help your dog out of the problem. Fortunately, there are products that can target both pests. One example is the spot-on insecticide which is easy to apply and provide optimal protection for a month. What’s important is you choose the insecticide that will break the life cycle of fleas. This is to ensure that while you are getting rid of the pests from your pet you are also killing them. This would ensue that they would not be able to come back that easily.
However, while you aim is to eradicate the pests you should also make sure that you would not harm your pet in the process. That is why many people prefer natural flea control. For instance, since cider is known to be a good insect repellent you can use apple cider vinegar to get rid of the pests. Fleas and ticks repel from the skin and cider would even soothe the skin of your dog. Apple cider vinegar is usually diluted with an equal amount of water. The solution is poured on the dog as a final rinse during bath. It is left until the dog’s skin dries.

Diatomaceous earth, a type of fossilized algae which resembles chalk dust, also works to penetrate the shell of the fleas. The fleas would then be dehydrated until it dies. Of course, your dog should be healthy as well in order to better handle even a bad flea infestation. It would also be a good idea to include in their diet raw garlic. Essential oils would also repel ticks, fleas and other pests. You can use peppermint, pennyroyal, lavender, basil and other herbs in order to implement tick and flea control.

Make the Environment Flea and Tick Free

You cannot work on your dog alone because once your pet gets out he may still get fleas and pests outside. That is why his surroundings should be treated as well. You could start by washing the dog bed. You should also vacuum the carpets as well as the floors using strong cleaners thoroughly and regularly.

Since peppermint, pennyroyal, lavender, basil and other herbs can be used to implement tick and flea control you can also plant some of these herbs in your yard to minimize incidence of flea infestation. However, it is also a god idea to reduce vegetation, grass and flower in the backyard. You could also actually treat the area against tick, flea and other insects and pest just to be safe.
