Cats are adorable, however when they’re unearthing the garden and tearing your plants apart, you might not find them so. They are annoying as they spray all over the place, scratch up the earth and use your garden as a litter box.
Cats are adorable, however when they’re unearthing the garden and tearing your plants apart, you might not find them so. They are annoying as they spray all over the place, scratch up the earth and use your garden as a litter box. Whether you are a cat lover or not, watching your hard work in the garden being playfully smashed to bits isn’t fun!!! Your garden being disturbed by cats isn’t just an aesthetic issue, it’s unhygienic as well. Cat pee will ruin your plants and the soil since it isn’t fertile. Cat poo poses serious health risks as it carries a disease called toxoplasmosis which is extremely dangerous to young kids, pregnant women, dogs and those with weak immune systems.

Since cats are unpredictable and territorial, keeping them away from your plants and gardens can be tricky and a time-taking process. Today, there are many options available in the market to keep those nimble felines away from your garden. There are chemicals, water based solutions and even electrical apparatus which will help you maintain the sanctity of your garden and the sanity of your mind.

However, if you’re looking for humane and natural options to keep them away, there are other options. There are certain scents that cats hate like lemons, oranges or similar citrus fruits. You can cut these up and sprinkle around your plants. A mixture of rosemary and water also does the trick. Another way is to plant certain plants in your garden which will keep those kitty paws off your precious plants. Plants like Coleus Canina, curry, lavender, rosemary and a few others are proven cat repellents.

Coleus Canina plant or the scaredy cat plant is one of the most effective plants which works as a barrier against cats. In fact, it earned its colloquial name as the scaredy cat plant, because cats hate the foul smell emitted by this plant. Its pungent odor even deters dogs and rabbits. An environmentally safe plant, Coleus Canina does no harm to kids. Growing the Coleus Canina plant is probably one of the easiest and safest ways to repel cats.

It is surprising that even Lavender repel cats since the scent is quite pleasant. Try to plant the taller version of lavender since it is a shrub and cats can easily jump over it. Lining your borders with the tall growing variety of lavender will not just block the cats’ line of sight but will also keep releasing scent as you brush against them.

Rosemary also has a sweet smell which deters cats. Since it prefers a warm and dry environment, you can grow it in containers and place around your indoor plants if you own a cat. Some other plants which repel cats are Hawthorn, Wild Rose, Bramble, Holly, Prickly Currant, Pyracantha, Berberis, Pampas Grass and Blackthorn. You can plant these plants on the periphery of your garden or in between your regular ones to mark the territory and stop cats from wandering into your garden.
