A Prong Collar When You Might Want One For Your Dog

2016/5/3 17:00:52

Your dog might need a prong collar if they have attitude problems or when they are going to a training class. Pain is what most people think of when they see a prong collar they are scary looking. As long as you know how to use the collar your dog will be ok.

A prong collar is not used to hurt a dog only to train or walk an unruly dog. They are really kept as an aid for teaching or training a dog. Always take the collar off of your dog when not training or walking them. If the collar was to get stuck on something it could cause serious harm to your dog.

There are dog trainers that will tell you to always use the prong collar when walking your dog, others will tell you to never use it after training is over. The choice is up to you, if you have a large dog and you feel that training didn’t work and he still pulls too much, you may want to use it. If not you might want to try a harness. The easy walk harness is great for stopping a dog that likes to pull. Pulling not only hurts the dog, but your back and arms will feel the pain too.

You do need to know how to put the prong collar on properly, and where it should be located. If the collar is too tight it can be painful and if it is too loose it will not be effective. If the collar is in the wrong spot on your dog it can cause an injury. As for putting the collar on your dog, well different trainers have different ideas about this also. Some feel that you can properly place the collar over the dogs head and still be able to achieve the proper position while others feel that you must take the links apart and place it on the dog and then replace the links. I would suggest following the lead of your own dog trainer.

There are some trainers that feel that just because they are training a large breed dog that they must use a prong collar, others disagree. You can have the biggest scariest looking dog in the world but he may really be as gentle as a lamb. This kind of collar used on this type of dog would only instill fear into them. When you are looking for a trainer try to find one that will keep this in mind and not one who will try and force you to use a prong collar.

A prong collar might be the best thing for some dogs but it might be the worst thing for your dog.
