Unsure Of What To Feed Your German Shepherd?

2016/5/3 16:32:03

You must understand that your German Shepherd has similar nutritional requirements to humans if you want to feed them your own diet because you are worried about the quality of commercial diets, which often vary enormously across different brands.

Your German Shepherd can suffer from upset stomachs and abnormal stools if you are feeding the incorrect diet, which is not very nice for anyone!

When looking at commercial dog food brands there can also be a large variation in price. You can generally buy the highest quality dog food from your local Vet depending on where you live. A poorer quality dog food may be cheaper to buy, but because of the lower quality you end up needing to feed more in order to maintain a healthy weight for your dog, so you may be better off actually buying the more expensive, higher quality diet.

To make sure your German Shepherd is receiving a balanced and nutritional diet you may consider feeding them a home cooked diet.

When preparing a home cooked diet for your dog you need to consider all the different food groups that are required. Dogs are classes as omnivores which means that as well as eating meat they also eat some grains, grasses and berries when in the wild so you need to ensure you feed all of these food types.

The ratio you need to remember in order to include the right portions in your dog’s diet are 40% meat (beef or chicken), 30% vegetables (carrot) and 30% starch (rice or pasta). Feeding your dog too much of one food source can result in them becoming unwell.

Preparing food at home for your dog does not mean they require anything fancy, just make sure they get regular exercise and their diet is nutritionally balanced and they should get along just fine!
