An American, and not an Australian breed, the Aussie seems to have been originally raised in the Western US. It is thought that they were primarily used to herd Australian sheep, giving them their name. They were very effective in the Rocky Mountains, since they were unaffected by the elevation.

They often live an average of about ten to twelve years. They sometimes fall victim to eye problems, as well as hip and/or elbow dysplasia. An all white dog is considered “double merled” and will most likely be blind and/or deaf. These dogs can still lead full lives and make wonderful pets, given some special considerations.

The Aussie is one of the most energetic breeds of dog available. They require someone who has the ability and the time to exercise them effectively and often. An Aussie will do well at virtually any dog sport, including frisbee, flyball, obedience and herding competitions and agility. Their high intelligence can be a detriment, though, in the wrong circumstances. An Aussie needs frequent stimulation, or will get bored. A dog who is bored is often one that gets into trouble, by getting into things he or she shouldn’t. In fact, they can become destructive if not given ample time and opportunity to burn off their boundless energy.

Despite this, an Aussie is a devoted companion to his human family. Longing to please, they will patiently work with their owner again and again on whatever task is set before them, until they are able to do it perfectly. They are also excellent guardians both of their family and their family’s property. An alarm bark will let their owner know that there is something to look at, but Aussies are not dogs that bark excessively.

Because this is a herding breed, the instinct to herd is likely to be strong and it can prove difficult to break. Herding dogs are notorious for herding children, cats and other dogs that they live with. This can be frightening to some people, since most herding dogs work by nipping at the ankles of the herd.

This is a breed that some may consider high maintenance, and so a person should carefully evaluate their own situation before looking for Australian Shepherds for adoption. However, with the right situation, these dogs can be the ultimate companion, and the true definition of man’s best friend.
