Favorite Toys for Weimaraners

Weimaraners were bred to be hunting dogs, and have a lot of energy that they need to use. One way of keeping your weimaraner from going stir crazy and tearing up the house is to provide him or her with toys to play with harmlessly. Toys with lots of variety will help keep this intelligent dog from becoming bored and becoming destructive.

A simple tennis ball is a toy that most dogs like to play with, and their humans can enjoy it as well. Just hold the ball out to your weimaraner, say, “Fetch,” and throw the ball. If your dog does not chase it, do not make the mistake of chasing it yourself; your dog will expect you to fetch. Wait and try again later. Rope toys are also good for fetching, and offer a change from the ball.  Frisbees are not always safe because leaping up and twisting around to catch the can hurt a dog’s back.

Toys made to hold treats can be a lot of fun for dogs and keep their minds as well as their bodies occupied. Hide the treat in the toy and let your dog figure out how to get it. Some toys’ levels of difficulty can be changed, depending upon how much of a challenge your dog needs. Change the type of treat given from day to day to keep your weimaraner from getting tired of it. Some pet supply stores, such as Petco and Petsmart, allow dogs to come in and shop, so you can find a treat that he or she especially likes before buying it.

Squeak toys can be fun to play with, chase, chew, and hear the sound they make. Some are designed specifically for dogs, although those designed for small children will work just as well, and some have a sweet scent that appeals to some dogs. A more sophisticated version of the squeak toy is the toy with a sound chip with recordings such as peaceful, soothing bubbling water. Some toys have the ability to record sounds, so that you can record a message such as the dog’s name and have the toy repeat it for yoru dog.

Battery-operated toys that walk or flag their wings can be fun for dogs to interact with, but they don’t always last all that long because they tend to stimulate the dog’s predatory instincts. An animated toy given to a dog for Christmas can end up as a skeleton by 26 December. Still, if you can afford them, they can be fun for the dog to play with and fun for your to watch and video.

Toys used in agility training can provide a good outlet for lots of energy and provide good exercise for both you and your dog. Barriers such as hurdles are good for weimaraners to jump over. Teeter-totters provide some moveable entertainment as the dog walks up one side and down the other. A straight line of poles really tests agility as the weinaraner goes around them. Remember, a tired dog is a happy dog, so running an agility course will help your weimaraner to fall into a blissful nap. Whatever toy you get, have fun with your fun with your best friend.
