Shavings are often used as bedding material for the horse抯 stable. Stable shavings, look good and the smell of it is wonderful; however it may not be good as absorbent. Kiln-dried shavings are better as bedding due to its lower moisture content and better absorbing character than chip-like shavings. If loose shavings are used, there might be respiratory problems to the horse and it could also be a potential fire hazard. It is cost effective to buy bulks of loose shavings instead of bagged shavings. One should not go for Cedar bedding as it resists decomposition. . Some horses are also allergic to cedar.

Another often used bedding material is wood pellet. The pellets are made with kiln-dried wood and sawdust. Compressing the fine material makes small and hard pellets. These pellets when used as bedding expands back into sawdust. These wood pellets are also low in dust. As the pellets have low moisture content, they compost well after absorbing moisture. One should be careful as the pellets are made up of 100% wood and have no glue or chemical additives in them. One should know how to clean wood pellet bedding as otherwise a lot of time would be wasted. In very cold countries, there could be less absorption of moisture of the wood pellets. One can also use alder sawdust as an excellent wood bedding material.

Peat Moss can also be used as bedding material, especially if there are respiratory issues in the barn. These peat are very absorbing material and are liked by everyone. Due to its soft bedding, horses like Peat Moss. The flip sides of Peat Moss are that due to the fine organic material, the room of the stall could get dusty during dry season. It also looks dark and dirty and often is unappealing to many horse owners.

One can also use shredded newspaper as an excellent bedding material. It is normally made from overruns of newspapers stock that are cut or torn into strips. The style of the tearing the newspaper increases the absorbent ability of the bedding material and also stops the sharp edges from cutting the horse.
Some other interesting bedding materials that could be used for bedding are rice hulls, wheat by-products, shredded phone books, hemp and shredded cardboard. One can also see straw pellet as bedding material.
