Is Owning a Chihuahua The Right Choice For You?

Chihuahuas are one of the most popular dog breeds in today's society. Chances are you probably know someone who owns one. However, if you are thinking about getting one, you should decide if owning a Chihuahua is the right choice for you. It's a decision which shouldn't be made without thinking it through.

Chihuahuas have a reputation for being aggressive to animals and people other than their owners. However, if you socialize them with people when they are a puppy, you will help them become more comfortable being around other people. This can be anything from taking them over to a family members house, taking them to the pet store, or just a walk through the neighborhood.

If you already have other dogs in the house, you will need to keep them separated from your Chihuahua until they are used to each other. They can be aggressive towards other dogs, even if they are larger than they are.

You should always let your dogs eat by themselves to avoid potential fights. It doesn't take alot of force to seriosuly injure or even kill a small Chihuahua.

Chihuahuas are actually the smallest dog in the world, and many people decide they want to own one just for this reason. But, being the smallest also means they can get seriously injured easily. This makes them a not so good choice for homes with small children who could potentially hurt them, or even get hurt by them; Chihuahuas will bite if they feel threatened.

This tiny breed is known to have a large number of health related problems. You will probably need to spend money and time by taking them to the Veterinarian, but remember Chihuahuas can live up to fifteen years, so keep your Chihuahuas fit and healthy!

If you want to own a Chihuahua, be prepared to spend extra time potty-training them. They are intelligent dogs, but they often have an "I don't care attitude", and can be difficult to potty-train. However, they respond well with positive affection. So, reward your Chihuahua when they are good and potty outside, and don't be negative them, even when they are bad. Simply saying "Bad" is enough, you don't need to yell or hit them.

Don't think that just because Chihuahuas are so small, that they don't need to be taken outside for exercise. It don't matter how big your apartment or house is, they still have their physical and instinctive needs to be outside and run around. It not only keeps them in good shape, but it also keeps them mentally happy.

Owning a Chihuahua is a big decision, and you will have to make some sacrifices. However, they are one of the most loving dog breeds, with tons of personality. Chances are, you will feel like you have gained a lot more than you have sacrificed. Just remember to make sure you are completely ready to own one before you take that step.
