How to Keep your Horse Happy

Horses, as hugely sensitive animals, need and deserve our devotion to their care and well-being. It's not enough to only provide the bare necessities like food, shelter and whatever healthcare your horse insurance policy will cover. Like humans, it is those little extras that they need to be truly at peace with their place in the world.

Horses are essentially herd animals, so it is always best whenever possible to have more than one horse or pony in a paddock so they have company. As horse owner, you should be aiming for your horse to see you as part of the herd, preferably as herd leader. A horse may show his affection for you as the herd leader by chewing or licking. Only quality time spent with your horse can ensure that the trust and emotional bond between you can develop. When this is achieved, it will have a positive effect on all areas in the horse's handling and riding.

Horses are clean animals, so ensure that their stable/stalls are clean and warm, with deep bedding. A deep bed will help to alleviate any stress on joints and legs, as well as giving them a place to lie down in safety and comfort.

It's important to get the feeding right with horses. Be sure to feed little and often, as they will also be grazing throughout the day outside. It's best to incorporate all appropriate foods, to keep a healthy balance. Your horse needs lots of fibre for his digestive system, so lots of fresh grass or hay is essential. Another great source of fibre is grain, although too much of this could cause stomach upsets. Water should be available at all times. Water allows the food to ferment so it doesn't become solid and hard in the horse's rear gut. Regularity of feeding times is important for horses, as they do best when in a routine. Always feed them at the same time every day.

Daily grooming will show your horse that you love him and he will enjoy the time you spend together. Your horse will love you to give him a nice rub, a good brushing and a scratch here and there. This is real quality time which you should both enjoy every day. It will also maintain their essential coat, keeping it free from any pests and making it glossy and smooth. Don't forget their shoes; pick their hooves daily. They must feel comfortable on their hooves or they will become grumpy, not to mention that failing to take care of your horse's feet will put him at risk of injury or infection which could cost you a claim on your equine insurance.

Exercise is a key element in your horse's happiness. It is important for horses to have daily exercise. You should vary standard exercise routines with perhaps cross-country and jumping. Don't forget to also give your horse some time to play. Turn him out into the paddock so he can be free. Then they can socialise, play and have some time to themselves too. You need to ensure that your horse is given sufficient time to relax too - they can demonstrate erratic behaviour if simply put to task all the time.

Part of the physical and psychological well-being of your horse can be taken care of by following these few simple but important tips.
