Akita Puppies - Your Ultimate Training Guide

It is easy to fall in love with an Akita puppy, being that cuddly ball of fur that they are, but if they are not properly trained, you will be in for a big headache. This is true for all type o pets and the Akita isn't an exception. You need to be strong willed and act as the pack leader otherwise you will be trampled over.

The first rule in getting an Akita puppy is know that you can love and care for him/her for the rest of his/her life. A puppy is not a toy that you can play with and leave behind when you get tired of it. They will need attention, love and your time. This is a two-way relationship. Be a responsible master and they will love you unconditionally.

Now that that is settled you need to know what you are getting yourself into: a life-long loving companion. There have been stories on how faithful this magnificent creature is. Like how it has accompanied Shoguns and aristocrats in hunts and how one Akita stood continued to wait for his master at a train station 9 years after his master died. But this is accomplished by responsible ownership.

The Akita puppy is very easy to train even though the breed has been known to get bored easily, motivated training will be like a walk in the park. Here are some tips on how to train your puppy.

Never let a good behavior go unnoticed for the training period. You can give treats and you do not have to limit yourself to edible treats. It can be a cheerful "good dog," a loving pat on the head or a tummy rub.

Do not reward unacceptable behavior. (no matter how cute it may be!)

Reprimanding your dog should ever be done in a regular basis. Stick to rewards. But if you absolutely need to reprimand never use physical punishments. Nothing good will come out of it. You are teaching the dog to fear you rather than respect you. A stern "bad dog" in an angry voice will do.

Never reprimand your dog if not caught in the act. He will not understand what you are angry about.

Persistence pays. Never give a command that you are not willing to follow through on.

Break off unacceptable behavior like chewing, digging, eliminating in the wrong place, etc.

Some key points to concentrate on are obedience training, attitude towards other animals and temperament management. They are courageous and proud known not to back down. They tend to assert themselves and they are used to having alpha dog status. This behavior is what can get them into trouble but through careful and patient guidance they may grow to tolerate other dogs and animals.

I am sure that you will love your Akita puppy. Their personality makes it difficult to do otherwise. They are strong willed and very intelligent. And Akita puppies are known to be pottie trained very quickly, about a week or so. They are very clean, almost cat-like, rarely needing baths. They rarely bark unless there is reason for it. They are extremely loving and faithful to their family and aloof to strangers. These characteristics make them perfect as an addition to the family.
