Training your Dog to be Well-Behaved

Training your dog is vital to the safety of your family and your dog as well as the rest of the community. However, to many dog owners this task can seem as difficult as scaling a mountain.

There are many different ways and method to train a dog. You may have to try out several methods to see what your dog responds to you and what you can properly enforce.

One way to train your dog is to use a whistle. When you use a whistle to train your dog, the whistle you use should always be the same.

The whistle should also be blown in the same way every time you are commanding a certain thing. This repetition will help your dog be able to learn the signal quicker.

The dog must also know that it is not alright to ignore the whistle and you. Punishment for ignoring the whistle must be carried out in the proper way.

The best time to carry out a training a session is right before dinner time. Take him for a run and when he becomes hungry he will probably try to run away.

When he does this, blow the command for 'come' on your whistle. When he comes, reward him with a piece of meat and keep running.

Repeat this several times throughout the walk. Soon, he will learn what the command means and he will return promptly.

Commands for stop and drop can also be taught this way. Occasionally your dog will become rebellious which will require you to force him to obey you.

An extendable leash is ideal this enforcement of your command because the dog will not be able to completely run away. Be patient in training him and he will learn eventually.

Another command that every dog should learn is "home" or "go home." Start this training session by walking a short distance from the home.

If the dog is following you, order him to go home. Advance menacingly if necessary to persuade him to return home.

Increase the distance a little at a time, until the dog can be ordered to go home from any distance away from the house. This command may be critical in the future.

The commands "kennel up" and "quiet" are also very important for a dog to know. These commands can be enforced with a switch if necessary.

It is much nicer to have a well-behaved, quiet dog when it comes to nighttime. The time it takes to teach your dog this command will be well-worth the effort.

Dogs should also know what the word "No" means. This command can apply in a variety of situations.

The command 'no' should get your dog to stop participating in any activity that you do not approve of. At first he will not know what the command means.

After you use it, go up to your dog and give him a firm scolding and lead him away from the activity. If the scolding does no good, give him a quick switch and repeat the same punishment every time he does not listen to your firm "No" command.

One instance where you may have to use the "no" command is while walking. Many dogs are too friendly with people.

Your dog should be well-trained, good natured, and a good friend, but you do not want them following a random stranger which would lead to getting him lost or stolen. This training session involves getting a few strangers to the dog, which could be family friends, to chase him back to the house.

This will show him that he should not be so friendly with everyone. He will become more devoted to his owner, you.

Do not over do this training session, or your dog will become timid. You still want your dog to be full of life, simply a little more cautious and loyal.

The ultimate goal of dog training is to help your dog be able to deal with the world around them better. A dog that is trained generally leads a more comfortable, safer, and longer life.

These dogs are generally more appreciated by those around them and well-loved. A dog that is correctly trained will be able to accompany you to more places and interact with more of your friends.

The time and patience it takes to properly train a dog is well-worth the resulting well-behaved dog. Do not give up.

Your dog can learn new tricks no matter how old he is. You simply have to be willing to put in the time and effort.
