Feed Your Dog the Foods He Needs

Everyone has witnessed their pet eat grass at sometime in their life. It might raise a few eyebrows, but it is important to note the even thought the dog eats the grass, it isn't because he's omnivorous, instead he is usually trying to curb an illness they are feeling. The end result will be diarrhea or even vomiting from eating the grass to begin with.

But why do dogs do this? The question seems fair enough, this is something that their ancestors did a long time ago. In the wild, wolves and even some wild dogs will eat herbivores. When they are doing this, the stomach contents of the animal are usually consumed as well. This portion is what provides the animal with the vitamins and minerals that they need.

Like most carnivores, your dog will have a short digestive tract with sharp teeth. Their body is designed to tear apart flesh and eat it. Unlike an herbivore or omnivore, they don't have the flat teeth needed to grind down plants. Another factor is the sharp teeth your dog has is perfect for cracking bones open, and getting to the marrow.

In your dog is a very high acidic level stomach acid. This helps to break down the proteins that are consumed. Most herbivores, such as a cow, have multiple stomachs and a very long digestive tract that take time to digest and breakdown plant matter. Dog's don't have the benefit of these multiple stomachs, and long digestive tracts, this means the food he consumes must be digested quickly to get the health benefits from it.

But what does this actually mean? You should focus on the ingredients in his dog food to ensure he is getting the nutrients he needs. Often, grains and cereals are what tops the ingredient list in commercial dog food, but protein is almost no existent. A better alternative is only using a small portion of dog food and mixing it with raw hamburger or other meats. This gives him a better balance on his natural diet, and allows him to stay healthier longer, with fewer complications from food.

Don't let this idea bother you too much, because it is safe. Dogs have a higher tolerance to bacteria and other items that are found in raw meat. While it wouldn't be safe for us to consume food in this matter, your dog has the natural ability to break it down, and avoid getting sick at the same time. Plus, you will notice a nice shine begins on his coat as well. This is from the increase in protein that you end up feeding him.

If you are concerned about the nutritional health of your dog, you can also take the time to contact a vet. They will be able to provide you with the information you need to feed him foods that will keep him healthier, and at the same time prevent him from becoming ill from foods he cannot process.
