Why is an Earth Mole in My Compound?

Many people are not familiar with earth moles. This explains the reason why one can harbor them in the compound for a period of time without knowing that they are there. One of the main reasons why this is possible is because they live underground. They survive by eating anything found below the soil surface including the roots and root crops. They leave holes along the way which are likely to be problematic.

Moles are small in size with bodies covered by fur which hides their small ears. Their eyes are adapted to seeing in the dark since they spend most of the time underground. They are not however restricted to staying in the burrows but they can also be found in gardens and forests but its very rare for them to be found around the mountains.

It is possible to have a lawn become infested with moles within a very short period of time. You will be surprised to find numerous holes at the same time; holes that you had not noticed before. This is because moles increase in number very fast owing to their short gestation period of one month. Every animal makes its own burrows so the more they are the more the tunnels. These tunnels can even extend to several meters in length. If these tunnels are not made deep underground, the soil removed by the moles is pushed above the earth surface making a molehill.

Moles living underground will mainly be involved in two main actions; eating and making tunnels as long as they are not taking a rest. This is because they have to continuously feed for if they fail to get food, they will die.

The fact that they will be destructive if found in your yard does not mean that they are completely useless. These small creatures eliminate plant pests found underground for example the cutworms. Their tunnels also allow for proper ventilation of air into the soil; a plus for areas containing clay soils which are easily waterlogged. They are useful as long as their number is down but once they become numerous, there role changes from being useful to being a threat. This makes them be regarded as vermins.

Sometime back moles were liked by people for their skin which could be used for decorating clothes. This is however a part of history since they are no longer highly regarded. Nowadays, nobody can take these small animals to be useful in any way. They are seen as pests and killed any time that they are spotted.

What is an earth mole going to do when someone tries to exterminate it? Earth moles can not only tunnel frontward, they can run backward through their tunnels and can be very difficult to find. Earth moles will not just wait to be killed any time that they feel they are under threat. They will try to hide by changing the direction of their burrowing; they an dig tunnels from both sides, in front and from the back so if you are looking for them they can be problematic to get.
