Adopting dog is a wonderful idea, not just for you and your family but also for the hapless pup you may have saved from living his life in a rescue shelter. But being a dog owner is no piece of cake, it takes commitment and perseverance on your part to get accustomed to a dog living in the same house as you.

Adopting a pet is serious business and if you are not big on commitment, maybe you should skip it altogether. But if you really can care about him then, great news! But it is never black or white, is it? So to help you get out of the dilemma of 'adopt or not adopt' we have some questions you could ask yourself. Here are some questions to ask before adopting a pet.

Are You Honestly Ready?

Wanting a pet dog is entirely different than having and taking care of one. Determine your state of mind and be calm and assertive when you make this decision of adopting a dog. A dog comes with a lot of responsibilities and you should be ready to take care of them. Stay honest to yourself while making the decision because your behavior will be a direct reflection of your dog's behavior.

Is Your Family Ready?

As just mentioned, it is serious business and not for the ones who don't want responsibility. Consider yours and your family's wishes and feelings before you adopt a dog. Take not of things like who will be walking him, feeding him and taking him to the vet. Is everyone on the same page regarding the adoption of a dog? If not, it is better that you don't adopt him because a dog can sense resentment.

Can You Schedule Your Life Around a Dog?

Give a thought to your work life, are you punctual? Are you organized? Do you rely on excuses when you get late? If yes, then how often? These are some of the questions you must seriously consider because if you are one such person, then you will constantly find excuses not to take your dog out for a walk or not playing with him. These may just be minute details but to a dog- these things matter!

Is Your Neighborhood Dog-Friendly?

What sort of relationships do you have with your neighbors? Are there dogs nearby? Is there a hiking trail or park nearby? How easily can you get to a vet in case of emergency? The way your neighbor's dog socializes is an indication of the kind of neighborhood you are. This is basically up to the pack leader but in case of hostile surroundings you may have to look for better parks to let your dog socialize.

What is His Energy Level?

Consider your own age and your activity level before adopting a dog. It is never a good idea to adopt a dog with energy level higher than yours. Evaluate his energy level when he is out of his kennel, observe the way he behaves.

If you get started on the right foot, you are looking forward to a lot of happy times and fulfillment together.
