Every home with a cat box should have a litter catcher. Not all litter mats are created equally, so find out about your options.

Litter catchers are a necessity for every home with a litter box. If you have a cat, then more than likely you have a litter box, unless you have toilet trained your cat. A necessary accessory for your litter box needs is something to catch and trap the litter to prevent it from scattering about the house. Any cat owner knows the unpleasant feeling of stepping on tiny shards of cat litter or having bits of it cling to socks. Not to mention, the continuous need to sweep or vacuum up bits of litter and the embarrassment of having guests notice it strewn across the house.

Selecting From Litter Catchers

Litter mats don抰 just save the house from being subject to scattered cat litter, it also helps clean kitty抯 paws. So, now it is just a matter of knowing your options and making a decision. Some kits will include these items. There are kits for litter boxes that often have a scooper and a litter mat included. Sometimes, you can even find a complete cat owner starter kit. Otherwise, the kind of catchers available usually range in size, shape, color and claims to added features or benefits.

Color and Size and Shape

Obviously, these pet accessories come in a wide array of colors. So, that will be either individual choice, you can try to match it to your litter box or you can select one that matches the room you are putting it in. The standards are sort of a dulled slate blue or steel grey, but there are other choices around.

For size, you generally want to make sure it fits the opening of the litter box, which it should if you have a standard sized cat box. Secondly, it will depend on the size of the area you have the litter box in. If you have a large enough space, the choice is unlimited. But, if you are cramming the mat into a small space, or awkward layout, you may have to adapt to that.

Also, the bigger the cat, the bigger the box, the bigger the mat, generally. Shape, can either be personal preference or determined by the needs of the space in the room, again. There is usually square, rectangular or a half circle. So, go with what fits or what you like.

Other Factors

Some mats claim to have the best because of the gripping action that grabs the litter. Other mats claim that theirs is the best because of the soft material that is easy on paws. It doesn抰 seem likely both can be true together. For some, it is a matter of trial and error. If one does not work, you may have to try another. This can be true of size, too. If you get one but there still seems to be too much loose litter throughout the home, you may have to try a larger mat size. When it comes to litter catchers it is about what is best for you and your cat.
