Regional Differences in Horse Supplies

29 9:28:20

No matter what part of the country you live in, we all need similar supplies for our horses. Though, not every part of the country has the same weather, this article will help you figure out what you will need for the part of the country you and your horse live in.

Places with Variable Weather

If you live where the weather is variable and you go through all the seasons, you should have supplies for all types of weather conditions. From sheets and blankets for each season, as well as fly sheets and fly spray for the summer months. Water and shelter should be available no matter what the weather may be. It is always good to be prepared for whatever the weather may be; who knows, you could get snow in April. It’s common to see your local tack or supply stores change their items seasonally, which is good and lets you know what items you may need for the changing of the season.

Items you may need for all seasons:

Sheets and Blankets for all Weather Types
Fly Spray and Other Insect Repellents
Normal Grooming Supplies – Brushes, etc.
Water Buckets and Heaters

Places with Warm or Hot Weather

If you live in an area where the weather doesn’t go under 60 degrees, you should have light sheets and fly sheets. Fly spray is also another good thing to have if you are where it is always warm, because pests are always on the lookout for horses. Having extra protection for your horse from the hot sunrays, is also another key item to have, whether it’s some type of shelter, fly sheet or mask. Shaded areas are also good for horses that are always in warm weather, such as trees in a pasture or again a run in shed. Your local stores will have a good supply of electrolytes, buckets, insect repellent and other items to keep your horse cool and comfy on those hot days.

Items you may need in areas where it’s always warm:

Protection From the Heat and/or Sun
Fly Sheets and Masks
Insect Repellants
Extra Water

Cold Weather

If you life where it is always cold, snowy or icy, it is best that you have good and durable blankets. It is highly unlikely that you will need insect repellants, but it doesn’t hurt to keep some on hand. You should have heated water buckets or water heaters so your horse always has water to drink. If you live where you frequently get snow, a hoof pick will also be a good choice to pick the ice and snow that gets packed into your horse’s hooves. If your horse is living outside during the cold weather, consider attaching a hood or neck cover to his blanket for added warmth and protection. If you live where it is always cold, you may find that your local supply store has stocked up on heaters, big heavy blankets and bedding.

Items you may need if you live where its rather chilly:

Extra Blankets
Water Heaters
Grooming Supplies
Extra Bedding for Stall or Shelter

Someone living in California will not need the same types of blankets as someone living in Alaska. It all depends on where you live and what your seasonal weather is like. As we all know, the weather can be unpredictable, but it is best that no matter where you live you should be prepared for anything.
