There are roughly 150 of the 300+ different species of parrots kept as companion birds.?You will find about 10-20 different species available in most pet stores so your decision on which one to buy will be less difficult.?You made the decision to invest in an African Grey Parrot.?Noted as probably the best speech mimicking parrot and one of the most intelligent, the African Grey Parrot is among the top companion birds in people抯 homes today.?

The African Grey Parrot comes from the rain forests of Central and West Africa.?The African Grey Parrot, also known as Psittacus erithacus come in two subspecies.?They are the Timneh Grey and the Congo Grey parrot.?Although both are equally as intelligent and skilled at speech mimic, there are some physical feature differences between them.?The Congo Grey is a little larger in size and has a black beak.?The Congo has gray feathers and a cherry red tail.?The Timneh Grey has a maroon tail, a darker gray body and is a little smaller than the Congo grey parrot.?It is said that the Timneh Grey parrot can start to speak at an earlier age but I have had early success from my Congo Grey too.?

The ability to mimic sounds and human speech has always been something that has fascinated us about birds.?While not all parrots have the speech mimicking ability, some that do have this amazing talent are the Amazons, Senegals, Cockatoos, Macaws, and of course the African Grey Parrot.?There are quite a few other bird species that with time and dedication from its keeper can learn to mimic human speech to a small degree. These birds can include the Parakeet, Cockatiel, Lovebird, Conures and some others.?While there is always an exception to the rule with these birds as far as speech mimic, you will find that they all can add real joy to our households.?

I have had parrots most of my life and have found that each one no matter what species he is from, has their very own unique personality and amazing traits.?Each type of parrot that we bring into our home will find its way into your family just like every other family member.?Keep in mind that some parrots are easier going than others and some are a little more nervous at times.?Although the African Grey Parrot can be a little skittish around children, teaching them to be calm and caring with the bird can make him more trusting and loveable to the entire household.?The African Grey Parrot is an amazing bird that can live 50+ years if provided a healthy diet and a good home. These are a few reasons why this parrot is my favorite to keep and that of so many other parrot owners .
