Food Your Dog Shouldnt Eat

It can be tempting to share leftovers and treats with your dog they are part of the family after all. But some foods which are edible to humans are not suitable for dogs as they have a different digestive system and metabolism. Some foods may cause a mild digestive upset, but others can cause severe illness, and even death.
The most obvious things to avoid giving your dog are those which also affect humans, such as bad, mouldy food and alcohol or drugs prescription or otherwise which have not been prescribed for your dog. Many human drugs and some supplements, such as iron, affect dogs differently and it is best to get a vets advice before feeding your own painkillers or anything else to your dog.
There are also other common foodstuffs which can cause harm including some fruit and vegetables. Onions, garlic, avocado, grapes, mushrooms, raw potato and macadamia nuts are some examples. Some plants in the garden can be poisonous too. Carrots, green beans and cucumber should be fine as a snack, in addition to baked potato, cooked rice or pasta. White rice with a bit of lean chicken is ideal for many dogs recovering from digestive upset.
Many know chocolate is poisonous to dogs but it is still common to see people offering their dog part of their chocolate snack! Did you know in high quantities (more than you would ever actually eat) chocolate would kill humans, although it takes a much smaller amount to kill a dog. Furthermore there is no cure for caffeine poisoning so your dog should not have tea, coffee, cola or energy drinks such as Red Bull.
Salty, fatty and sugary foods should be avoided. All are unhealthy additions to a dogs diet and can cause problems such as chemical imbalances in their bodies, obesity, diabetes and other serious diseases.
You can make sure your dog has a healthy, well-balanced diet by using a quality complete dog food. This will give your dog all the nutrients he / she needs for an active and healthy life. You can still give your dog other food as a treat but what you offer should be well considered and the portions controlled.
