There are a number of dental facts that Bright Side Dental wants to share with you. Bright Side, your convenient Michigan family dentist, has offices located in Sterling Heights, Canton and Livonia.

Did you know? The American Academy of Periodontology's (AAP) recent consumer survey found that half of the people surveyed notice a smile on the face before any other feature. And eighty percent of the people surveyed are not happy with their smile!

Respondents of the AAP survey were seven times more likely to have periodontal or smile enhancement procedures, than facelifts. This is good news, because smile enhanced procedures are much easier and safer. They outnumbered eyelid surgeries five to one.

Oral health improves when people visit the dentist regularly. According to the US Center for Disease Control (CDC), the oral health of people in the United States has improved greatly, and is the best it has ever been. Despite that, oral diseases continue to be commonplace in the United States.

Among adults, more than 164 million work hours are lost each year because of dental problems. The Academy of General Dentistry found that the average person only brushes for 45 to 70 seconds a day, although the recommended amount of time is 2-3 minutes. The AAP survey found that 94% of Americans say they brush nightly, 81% say they brush first thing in the morning. But only 28% of people say they floss daily.

By age 17, 78% of young people have had a cavity, and 7% have lost at least one permanent tooth. Among adults aged 35 to 44 years, 69% have lost at least one permanent tooth. Among adults aged 65 to 74, 26% have lost all their natural teeth.

Untreated tooth decay remains a problem. About one third of persons across all age groups have untreated decay. Among adults aged 35 to 44, 48% have gingivitis, and 22% have destructive gum disease.

It has been discovered that people who drink three or more sugary sodas daily do have an increase of 62% more dental decay, fillings and tooth loss. The average American consumes 600 cans of soda each year. Trick or Treat? $2.025 billion was spent on Halloween candy in 2001!

It is a well-known fact that tobacco use increases the risk of gum disease. Smokers continue to be three times more likely than non-smokers to lose all their teeth. This is a statistic that has not changed from a decade ago.

Unfortunately, tooth decay has been found to be one of the most widespread childhood diseases. It is five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hayfever in 5-to-17-year-olds.

Dentistry is considered affordable, compared to many other expenditures. Comparatively in one year, people spent only $50 billion on dentistry, but $100 billion on hair care, $50 billion on pet food and $300 billion on legal gambling! Americans spend only $2 billion a year on dental products used daily, toothpaste, mouthwash and dental floss.
