Before considering taking up the new hobby of collecting exotic pets, make sure you are prepared for the commitment. Caring for animals requires dedication of both time and money. The definition of what an exotic pet is can vary so for the purposes of this writing, it can mean anything other than a common Labrador. Because there are so many varieties and mixes of dogs, there are certainly some that are rarer than others. Because most dogs can interbreed, it is often difficult to know if the dog is a mix or pure breed. In such instances where proper lineage cannot be determined, dog DNA testing is available to provide you with definitive data.

Another thing to consider about exotic pets is that they are rare for a reason; they are more difficult to care for that pets that are more common. Make sure you have the correct living environment prepared for them. The temperature, moisture, lighting, etc., all need to be considered. Learn their ideal diet before hand and other important aspects of your chosen pet. Remember that animals grow. Plan for your new pet as if it was fully grown. You also need to consider the social requirements of the animal. Do they need others around them, or will they be fine on their own. Also, what arrangements will be made for the care of the pet of you leave on vacation? Companies exist for overnight dog boarding, but may not be available for more exotic pets.

One type of exotic pet that is popular is a lizard. They come in all shapes in sizes. The common wall gecko is a fun one because of its ability to climb the walls and ceiling. Iguanas are also common, but can be dangerous as they get larger. Their tail it strong and if their swing strikes just right, they can break a bone.

Snakes are also a common exotic pet and one of the most frequent escapees. Obviously you would want to steer clear of the poisonous snakes as pets, however, keep in mind that as constrictor snakes get larger, they can be a danger to small children and pets.

Many animals such as rabbits, mice, hamsters, etc., also are found in exotic varieties. Those that are dwarfs would certainly fall into this category; others may have unique colors, or hair length. If you want to be more daring, then there is an entire realm of exotic animals from monkeys, to alligators and more. Whatever you do, make sure you take good care of your pets.
