How To: Freshwater Aquarium Maintenance

2016/5/3 14:42:39
Maintenance of a freshwater aquarium is not as hard as you might think. To keep your fish in sound surroundings you will need to perform regular checks to be sure your water and tank additions (such as water-pumps) are looking good. The minimums for maintaining a freshwater aquarium involve removing and adding water, getting rid of filth in the water (left over food) and making sure your tank additions are properly working. After reading this text you will have a better idea how to keep a happier home for your fish.

One easy step is to examine the aquarium daily. If the water looks unclean, or the fish are behaving unusually, there is likely a problem. It may be time to swap out some of the water and get rid of the remnants of fish-food in the tank. When your fish are behaving unusually, this definitely merits some attention.

Often it is recommended that 1/4th of the freshwater in the tank be swapped out every two weeks. But, it's widely held that lesser more incremental changes are more effective at maintaining a suitable environment for your fish. Try changing out 1/10th off the water weekly. Swapping out this water reduces the concentration dangerous chemicals that can not be removed by filters and water pumps.

Using a wet rag that has not been exposed to any chemical cleaners, you should wipe away residue build up from the inner glass of the aquarium. Also, use Windex or some other glass cleaner to clean the outer glass as well. Some pet stores will suggest you use an algae scrubber to clean the inner glass if it is not coming off with a rag.

Take the time to clean out any objects that may be jamming up your water-pump. There is also a slimy build up that should be wiped away. Filters should be replaced monthly, or if you have gone the way of reusable filters, you should plan to spend some time rinsing them thoroughly and replacing them afterward. Taking the time to do these things will not only save you money (like having to replace your water pump), but will also help to keep your water more clean.

There is not much too the maintenance of a freshwater aquarium. Fit, lively and active fish will flourish in an environment that is attended to. Make a schedule and stick to it. Try leaving reminders on your mirror or fridge if you find your self forgetting to regularly check on your fish. Your friends with gills will be thrilled with their home.
