If you have a furry friend, you can enjoy a wonderful vacation in Mexico with them at your side. This is because it is very easy to travel to Mexico with your pet, especially if you will be driving. Mexico is generally very pet friendly, and pets are allowed at most hotels and RV parks. Dogs will love the freedom they will enjoy in Mexico, since there are no leash laws. Crossing the border with your pet does require a little planning though, since there are a few things you will need to prepare.

Paperwork from your Veterinarian.
You will need to take your pet into your vet and have them make sure they are in good health. Your veterinarian will need to issue you two documents:

1. An International Certificate of Good Health (Form 77-043) that will have the signature of both your veterinarian and the State Veterinarian.

2. Proof of vaccination against rabies and distemper, administered at least 15 days prior to your pet's entry into Mexico.

Bring supplies.
Quality pet stores are few and far between in Mexico. Chances are you won't find your favorite foods or grooming care supplies, or medications such as flea and tick drops. You will want to stock up and bring as much as you can with you. Especially remember to bring plenty of flea and tick medication, since you will encounter new species of insects in Mexico that may carry diseases that could make your dog ill.

Bring a good leash.
There are a lot of stray dogs in Mexico and many carry disease. Its best to keep your pet away from these animals, and keeping them on a close leash is the best way to do this. When you are out on the beach or on a hike, you can let them roam free but when you are in a city or village where you see lots of strays, keep your animal close to avoid having them get into an altercation with a wild dog.

Research Pet Friendly Hotels.
You can plan your trip by finding pet friendly establishments along the way and making reservations ahead of time. Gringo Dog Online has put together a list of dog friendly hotels in Mexico. In general, though, most hotels are pet friendly. But, be prepared to put down a deposit at some places. Also, if you have a breed of dog that is considered aggressive, such as a Rottweiler or Pit Bull, you may be asked to keep them on a leash or with you at all times.

When planning your road trip, don't forget to get insurance. You will need to get a Mexican car insurance policy for the RV or car you will be driving to Mexico. This policy will need to be presented to the border guards along with the paperwork for your pet. Having it ready ahead of time will save you time and frustration at the border. So start planning your next Mexican road trip adventure so that both you and your animal companions can enjoy a fantastic vacation together!
