Dog Bite Litigation

Ever been bitten by a dog? I'm not talking about a little nip, but a real bite. There's nothing remotely pleasant about it. Dog attacks are fairly frequent in the United States, with close to a thousand people in ER's daily because of a dog bite. It's important to receive prompt medical attention should you be a victim of a dog bite. Often, an attacking dog is rabid or suffering from other health problems. This is even more true if the dog is a stray, as strays are more prone to disease.

Of course, you could also be bitten by a domestic dog. Unfortunately, many dog owners aren't responsible in the care of their dogs. Sometimes kids provoke dogs to the point that they go after every person around. Animal bites may be quite traumatic, and if you're bitten, you may require plastic surgery. Fortunately, many cities require that animals be contained either by a leash or kept in a fenced yard.

If you've been bitten and go to an emergency room, you'll be treated to make sure any disease you could have gotten won't run through the rest of your body. Tests will be run on the animal to determine if rabies is present. If so, then you're in for a series of uncomfortable shots. Some dog bites require the skill of a reconstructive surgeon if a skin graft is needed to repair the damaged parts of the body. All of this can become quite costly.

If you have to undergo surgery to correct your injuries, then you may have to consider getting a lawyer. Though this may seem expensive, many attorneys will not charge you until they win the case. Most animal attack cases are won by the plaintiff as long as you weren't teasing the animal. In fact, many attorneys reach an out of court settlement in dog bite cases. This alleviates your having to attend court and spend more of your time on the matter. An attorney will be able to obtain medical evidence and conduct an investigation into the animal's history. Your attorney will discover whether the dog has had it's shots and if it's attacked anyone else, all of which are very helpful in this sort of case.

So, if you or someone you love was bitten and required medical attention, you should locate an attorney who specializes in animal attacks to help you get reimbursed for your medical costs. You can look on the internet or in your phone book. Asking your local law enforcement agency for a referral is another possibility. More than likely, they will be happy to assist you.

Of course, to avoid all of this, we as responsible pet owners must be sure to have our pets vaccinated regularly and keep them contained.
