Dalmatian Dog Breed Information

Description: The Dalmatian is a medium sized dog that is well muscled and has a great deal of stamina. The dog is 22 to 24 inches at the withers with the bitch 2 inches less. The weight of either sex will be about 55 pounds. The Dalmatian is unmistakable with its dramatic white coat spotted with black. The spots of this dog are not always black, but can also be brown, tan, lemon, or blue. Born white, the puppies will develop spots as they grow older. The Dalmatian lives for 10 to 12 years. It is also known as the Dalmitiner.

History: Images of spotted dogs have been found from Ancient Egypt, Greece, and India, but the Dalmatian has finally been recognized as having originated in Croatia. A great deal of discussion about where this dog developed has finally be settled. It was in England, however, that the Dalmatian really came into being as a coach dog. Before modern transportation, people would travel in horse-drawn coaches. Highwaymen and other brigands sometimes infested the roads and the Dalmatian was used as a guard for the coach, its passengers, and the horses. Because this dog is so fond of horses, it easily transferred its loyalty to horse drawn fire engines, and the Dalmatian is often found in firehouses to this day.

Temperament: The Dalmatian is a very loyal and affectionate dog with its human family. It bonds closely with them and will be unhappy, and possibly destructive, if left alone outside. Because the Dalmatian is so active and energetic, it is probably not the best dog for very young children. Older children are fine. Although the Dalmatian is a friendly dog, it will not be a good choice for people who are unable to give it enough exercise - these people will end up with a high strung, nervous dog that exhibits undesirable behavior.

Health Issues: Deafness is probably the most common health problem that the Dalmatian has. Something like 12% of this breed will be born deaf. It is recommended that all Dalmatian pups be checked for this while young, and neutered if they are deaf. Being deaf has no influence on the dog as a pet, however, and a deaf Dalmatian will be just as good a companion as one that has perfect hearing.

Grooming: The Dalmatian should be brushed several times a week to remove dead hairs. It will shed all year, with a blow occurring twice yearly. The teeth of this dog should be cleaned at least once a week. The Dalmatian does not appreciate the cold and should be given a sweater to wear in winter.

Living Conditions: It is probably not a good idea to get a Dalmatian if it will live in an apartment, it is really too active and energetic for such a confined existence. This dog should not be kept outside, even in good weather, because it needs to be around its family to be happy. A fenced yard is perfect, but the owner should be aware that the Dalmatian loves to roam and will run off for quite long periods of time if allowed.
