You will need to have the hard wires placed in the ground; they only need to be placed roughly 3 inches below the surface in the area that you want to contain the dog. The signal will be able to travel through the wire for many years and if installed correctly you will never need to replace it. You will also need a transmitter unit which is where the signal is sent from, this will pulse through the wires ensuring that it is continuous. This safe designated area will keep your pet contained and happy whilst they are outside.

The messenger part of the signal will need to be worn by your dog, you will need to ensure that they collar is receiving the correct signal and that it works effectively. You will need to spend some time training your dog to understand what is expected of them and how the underground electric dog fences work. If your dog gets too close to the perimeter of the fence then a beeping noise will begin, if the dog does not walk away then a low voltage shock is sent through the collar. Very quickly your dog will realize that when the beeping occurs they need to walk away from the area. There is no lasting effect from the shock as it is very low and your dog is startled more than hurt.

You should ensure that you spend time with your dog to teach them what you expect from them, 10 minute sessions at first will be enough. You dog will very quickly learn with gentle coaxing and encouragement which areas of the dog fences they can go near.
