Dogs are one of the best friends of men. The loyalty and the friendship displayed by this canine are simply amazing. But the police use dogs for some other purposes; purposes which show that a dog can be much more than a mere loyal pet. They can be helping friend.

Service Dogs

Generally the term 憇ervice dog?refers to dogs who has special qualities to assist the police in their investigations. Dogs equipped with service dog equipments are dangers to the criminals. Because of their natural smelling power, they can detect one object touched by the target person amongst many other similar ones. So it becomes easier to track them and to hunt them down. Service dogs are often called K9 unit. The word K9 is a play on the word canine, which is the biological family of dogs.

Breeds

Popular breeds of police dogs or service dogs are Argentine Dogo (protect the officer, attack dog, sniff out foodstuffs, bombs and drugs), German Shepherd (protect the officer, attack dog), Bloodhound (track down criminals, protect the officer, attack dog) etc. Most modern police departments own police/service dogs having their own service dog equipments.

Service Dog Equipments

Say you are a cop following your dog at night time. You and your dog are chasing down a criminal or looking for the hints or clues. Now it is very rare that when a service dog finds a trail, he will go slowly, waiting for his master! So the dog moves on and it becomes impossible to see him/her in the darkness. The case would be far worse if it were jungle. So there comes the solution of using service dog equipments such as k9 dog tracker or GPS dog collar.

Dog Tracker & Collar

Various kinds of trackers and collars are available today in order to protect your service dog and to find them even in the absolute darkness. The gadgets use different technologies based on a basic principle, which is to send a signal to an attendant when his dog is missing. These are great ways to help the attendant identify the dog and find him. One such device works on the principle that when the dogs are lost, the policeman presses a button on a small device on his hand to make another device come into life. The second device is associated with the dog, generally on his collar and when it comes to life, it emits an electromagnetic pulse that helps the first device to track it. There is also another great method where the collar of a service dog glows at night and helps the attendant to find it when lost.

Modern equipments and service dogs together are very good combination which can act against preventing crime and help make the world a better living place.
