When to Use a Hopper Feeder

26 9:40:56
Although the tube bird feeder is a common choice among bird watchers, a hopper feeder could be a better one for you. Some birds will not come to a tube feeder, even if you fill it with the types of foods they enjoy. These birds will respond to the hopper feeder, though. It is up to you to choose which option works best for the type of birds you wish to attract but there are a few things you should know before you make that decision.

What Is A Hopper Feeder?

A hopper bird feeder is one of the more common options on the market. Here, the birds can rest on a perch or the side of the bird feeder while they eat. You will find hopper feeders in a variety of styles, including house shapes and bridge styles where they can rest under a top in an opening. Gazebo bird feeders are one type of this type of feeder. The common element to any of these feeders is that they hold a lot of bird food.

Benefits to Hoppers

The hopper style bird feeder has its advantages. First off, because you can add a good amount of seed to them, they do require less frequent refilling. If you are placing the bird feeder into an area that is harder to reach, this can be an incredible benefit to you. Also important to keep in mind is that these feeders are easy to disassemble and clean (in most cases.) You can spend more time enjoying your birds rather than spending it cleaning them out.

Most hopper feeders are very easy to use. To fill them, the roof of the birdhouse or gazebo will open up, allowing you a space to pour bird food into them. The device is generally durable when it is made from Plexiglas or even glass. Many are wooden as well.

Disadvantages

One of the only disadvantages to the hopper style is that it does attract a large number of birds which may mean that it will attract the larger birds that can drive off smaller ones. This includes sparrows and starlings, among others. Sometimes squirrels can be a problem as well. To reduce this problem, simply ensure that the birdfeeder is placed on a pole or hung in such a way as to keep it at least six to seven feet off the ground to keep squirrels from jumping on it.

Hopper feeders can be an excellent investment. Choose one that fits the style of your garden. Generally, you can find these feeders in all price ranges and styles. However, do invest in a quality product to give you a long lifespan. When you do that, these bird feeders will work well throughout the winter months, too.
