Finch Cage Requirements

26 9:24:17
Cages for finches require a delicate balance. Here are a few minimum requirements to be met when you're looking for a finch cage.

* Width Over Height

* No Flight Path Obstacles

* Include Engaging Activities

* Correct Lighting

* Perch Variety

* Easy to Clean

The width of your cage should always be the biggest part. Finches must have room to fly or they will not get their exercise. This also means you need to be careful about the placement of items and perches in the cage. Make sure the cage is easy enough to clean every couple weeks. The main focus on cleanliness should be around the water and food, then the nest, then perches.

What to Put in Your Finch Cage

* Water for Sipping

* Water for Bathing

* Food in Dish

* Millet in Various Places

* Cuttlebones

Provide some millet spray on the ground for foraging, or attached to a perch, or other places. Keep their food dish clean of seed shells and make sure there is always enough for the next 24-48 hours as finches need to eat very often. Use a very shallow dish or plastic for bathing water, and replace it anytime it's dirty. Cuttlebones are essential for letting out those beak frustrations and getting calcium at the same time!

What NOT to Put in Your Finch Cage

* Swings

* Ropes

* Balls

* Toys in General

* Anything Harmful When Ingested

* Bath Water too Deep

Generally finches don't enjoy toys the same way the parakeets and parrots do. Finches enjoy foraging, flying, and singing more than anything else. So as long as you get them a cage that's several feet wide, they will be much happier than they would in a vertical or square bird cage.
