Dog accessories and dog walkers

Even though it is okay for you to miss out on a day of exercise it is not okay for your dog. If this is happening repeatedly, it is important that you take the time and hire a dog walker. Though it is not easy to just leave your beloved pet under another's supervision. Here are a few suggestions that will help you decide how to choose a dog walker.

Look for them

The first place that you need to start looking in your search for a dog walker is at your vet's or pet store. Generally these places are where dog walkers prefer to advertise at. Another viable option is the park adjacent to your house. Recommendations in this department work as well. So don't be hesitant to ask your friends, family, relatives or neighbors. In fact when you do shortlist a few candidates, ask them for credible recommendations. If all avenues fail you can resort to the internet to find a suitable dog walker for your pooch.

Do not shy away from probing

Ask as many questions as you like. You are going to have to trust the person with your pet. A few questions such as the ones that follow should be asked. How long has the person been walking dogs for? Do they have any relevant training? How many dogs do they walk simultaneously? Where and for how long do they walk the dogs? Ask if they use any specific dog accessories while taking the pets on a walk? Inquire about timings and anything else that you can think of really. When it comes to the safety of your dogs, everything is fair game.

Get your trainer to meet your dog

Instead of just you meeting the prospective dog walker, get your dog to meet them. It is very important that your pet likes the dog walker more than you like them. As they are the ones who have to spend time with each other. Observe how your dog behaves around the person. Also if the person takes to your dog and will they treat them with care.

If possible ask them to take your dog on a test walk. Get your dog accessories like a leash, dog boots, etc. on and accompany the two on a walk. Take notes of whether or not both of them are comfortable. Also notice if your dog has to be cajoled to follow the instructions of the person. Notice if they are too aggressive with your pooch. It will only help you decide better.

Are they comfortable with dog umbrellas and other accessories?

Inquire if the dog walker treats the pets that they walk. If they do then what eatables do they use. If possible inquire if you can provide a specific treat that you bring for your pet while they are on their walks. Also ask if they are comfortable using dog accessories such as dog umbrellas etc. because not all walkers are skilled with them. They can also be challenging for walkers who walk more than one dog at a time.
