How to Determine a Flying Squirrel's Sex

How to Determine a Flying Squirrel's Sex. Flying squirrels are a member of the rodent family of mammals, and their sex can be determined using the same method used for other small mammals. Typically this is a look-and-see method, with minor differences between each type of small mammal. According to the Humane Society, knowing the sex of the animal is important to avoid unwanted breeding.

Check to see if your flying squirrel is male or female.

Step 1

Place the flying squirrel in a clear box. The box should be large enough to accommodate the animal comfortably but small enough to limit movement.

Step 2

Examine the animals under side.

Step 3

Look for male appendages or female nipples and orifices. On younger squirrels, these may not be pronounced enough to see. Typically, the distance between a male rodent's anus and genitalia is longer than in females.

Step 4

Check the scent of the animal. Male rodents typically have a stronger smell than females.
