Health care is a thriving industry today. Millions are being invested every day in research and manufacture of health products and services. It is one of the most lucrative fields to be in, advancements are being made every day and new products are continuously being launched. People are becoming more aware of their health and are looking for the best this industry has to offer to remain healthy. Health care has gone beyond just fulfilling the basic medical needs of people and has ventured into nutritional and cosmetic products and services. As of today we can buy a host of different health products like diet pills, nutritional supplements, multivitamin tablets and more. In this day and age, the question that flows through most people’s minds is whether age old home remedies are a better option that state of the art carefully crafted products.

As children we have been taught to listen to and believe what adults tell us. When we fall sick our grandparents look to and trust home remedies much more than the latest antibiotic available in the market. Maybe it’s the fact that they have time and again proved successful for the elderly or that the elderly don’t understand the new medical terms and science behind medicine, but these age old remedies continue to be used abundantly in most Indian homes. When a child gets a cough they’re usually first made to inhale steam or drink warm water with lime and honey. Taking a cough syrup is usually the last option. In many ways these remedies work better than antibiotics. They identify the root cause of the illness and nip it in the bud. As a result we are less likely to suffer a relapse. We’re often told to apply neem to wounds and dandruff infected scalps. Neem has antiseptic properties and is natural means of helping our body heal faster. Other common remedies include consuming mint leaves to cure acidity, ginger tea for colds, application of egg yolk on the scalp for thick and shinny hair and using an orange peel and turmeric scrub for glowing skin. These remedies work well because they’ve been tried and tested over the years. They are natural and put less strain on the body’s digestive and immune system. They are Natural remedies and so side effects are minimum and most of the time non existent. However not all remedies are easy to make or administer. The effect might take a while to kick in and a patient might take longer to recover by these methods. Further not all are full proof and may not be successful with everyone.

A lot of health companies today are trying to incorporate these remedies into the creation of their products. They are using the properties of natural ingredients in their medicine which tend to be more welcomed by all age groups. They are trying to take the best of both worlds and provide people with the best quality health and nutrition products. Products like Cod liver oil capsules contain fish oil that is a natural ingredient that contains omega 3 fatty acids which helps in improving eye sight. Similarly digestive tablets made with mint extracts are also now available. Thus we can see that science is working together with nature to products that best suit our body and the environment in which we live.
