PetPlace's Top Dog Breeds for 2001

Dogs

Which canine takes the spot of top dog for 2001? According to the American Kennel Club, it's the Labrador retriever again. However, an informal and totally unscientific analysis by PetPlace shows the golden retriever is the hot dog for the year 2001.

The data was collected using PetPlace page views, which are the number of times an article is accessed by a visitor. Each time a person accesses an article, the page view counter records it, sort of like the Nielson ratings for the Internet.

Golden retrievers, with 90,537 page views, edged out Labradors, 88,633. But the difference was slight – only 1,904.

By comparison, the AKC registry for 20001 showed that the Labrador was by far the number one dog, with goldens a distant second.

For the rest of the top 10 breeds, most of the AKC breeds from the year 2001 were represented in the 2001 PetPlace tally of page views. The rankings were different, however, and readers chose three breeds that didn't make the AKC top 10. Here are the rankings:

2. Golden retriever
3. German shepherd
4. Dachshund
5. Beagle
6. Yorkshire terrier
7. Poodle
8. Boxer
9. Chihuahua
10. Shih tzu

The German shepherd, the Yorkshire terrier and the Chihuahua didn't make the PetPlace list. Instead, the bichon frise, the West Highland white terrier and the cocker spaniel made the list.

So what do these numbers mean? From the PetPlace tally, they only show what breeds people were most interested reading about. The AKC registration shows which purebreds were most registered with the club.
