Is has been called Man’s best friend, proven to reduce stress, and can make just about anyone laugh.  What is it?  A dog.  In fact, according to the American Veterinarian Medical Association thirty-seven percent of American households own a dog[884].  Dog ownership popularity beats out every other animal including cats, birds, and fish.  It is not challenging to find another dog owner.  Simply walk down your street and you will see someone walking his or her dog!

Although there are many owners, dog ownership is not easy.  Raising a well adjusted and well behaved dog is time consuming and requires commitment from every single person in its life.  Dog ownership is also expensive.  You will need to feed the dog, take care of appropriate veterinarian costs, board the dog when you are out of town and enroll in obedient training classes.  According to the American Veterinarian Medical Association[884], the average annual veterinarian cost per pet owning household is $366.  That cost is simply for veterinarian related costs and does not include food, training, or boarding expenses. Despite the costs and time commitments, dog ownership can be very rewarding

If you are ready to make the plunge into dog ownership, your first question to tackle will be what breed of dog.  There are many different breeds recognized by the American Kennel Association.  Visit the American Kennel Association’s website to find out more about which specific breed will be right for you and your family.  Some of the most popular breeds are English Cocker Spaniel, Labrador, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and Golden Retrievers

After a breed has been decided upon, the next major decision of dog ownership will be choosing a top name for your dog. Picking a top notch name for your dog will be important.  It will need to fit its personality and appearance well.  Also, you too will need to like the name since you will be repeating this name on many occasions.  “Buddy come.” “Max sit.” “Molly down.”  Dog names frequently are names given to people as well.  Therefore, you might want to consider your friends and family’s names before settling on a name.  For example, you most likely will offend a few friends and family members if you name your dog the same name as your nephew, niece, or cousin!

As you sit down to decide on a name, give careful thought and make sure to pick a name you and the dog will like!  Below is a list of the most popular and top dog names according to the American Pet Insurance’s (API) 2008 collected data[883]:
