An Alusky is an intelligent and hard-working breed of dog that's also very affectionate as well. This is what we refer to as a designer dog, meaning that it is a crossbreed or a mixture of two different purebred animals.

What is an Alusky?

An Alusky is a mixture between an Alaskan Malamute and a Siberian Husky. Some breeders will breed Aluskys from two Alusky parents, whilst others will breed them from one Alaskan Malamute parent and one Siberian Husky parent. However, your Alusky should be a combination of the characteristics of both of these breeds.

What Should I Know About Designer Dogs?

Designer dogs can be difficult to predict. Unlike purebreeds, who are bred to strict standards over many generations, it is much tougher to say what your dog's future size, personality and characteristics will be. This is because crossbreeds inherit different amounts of different characteristics from each parents. Therefore we can only give you probabilities about your future dog based on what we know about the two parent breeds.

How Big Does Will My Puppy Get?

Both Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskys are quite big breeds of dog. An Alaskan Malamute can grow to between 22 and 26 inches and weigh anywhere from 70 to 95 pounds, with males being larger than females. Siberian Huskys are a little smaller, generally growing to between 20 and 24 inches and weighing between 30 and 60 pounds.

An Alusky will be somewhere in between, smaller than an Alaskan Malamute but generally larger than a Siberian Husky. They are usually quite a large breed, however.

What is an Alusky's Coat Like?

Both parent breeds are traditionally Arctic dogs. This means that they have medium length hair, and dense, thick coats to keep them warm in the winter. Your Alusky will certainly also have this sort of coat, straight, medium length and thick.

Do Alusky's Have Coat Concerns?

An Alusky's coat doesn't need styling or cutting. They do need frequent brushing, however, especially when the seasons change and they begin to shed. In general, Aluskys shed quite a lot of hair. Because their coats are so thick, Aluskys can have problems in hotter climates, getting easily overheated and dehydrated.

What is an Alusky's Personality Like?

Alaskan Malamutes are affectionate, loyal and easily trainable, though they can be destructive if they're not properly trained and well exercised. A Siberian Husky is very similar in temperament. This means that you're Alusky will be loving, faithful and very intelligent, but will need proper training and care.

How Much Exercise Will My Dog Need?

An Alusky will be a large and active dog, and will require lots of exercise. In fact, both Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskys are happiest when living outdoors, and the same is true for an Alusky. You'll need to take twice daily walks at a minimum, and preferably you dog should be able to be left outside to run and play as he likes.

Are There Any Health Concerns Associated with Aluskys?

Both Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskys are prone to hip problems, and some Siberian Huskys also get eye problems. However, both of these dogs are considered to be very healthy and sturdy breeds. As a crossbreed an Alusky will be more robust than a purebred dog, and there are no serious health concerns associated with them. Do watch out for overheating and dehydration should you live in a warm climate though.

How Do I Know That this Cross Breed is Right for Me?

Aluskys are extremely active dogs that need lots of exercise and they're at their happiest outside. Whilst an Alusky can be a good family dog, they're not generally great with very young children who lack the authority to give commands. An Alusky is a good choice for someone who works outside, or for a family home that has a very large garden. They do not suit apartment livers.
