Pomeranian Australian Shepherd mixes are beautiful dogs, often having very distinctive coat colours and markings. These dogs are what we refer to as designer dogs, meaning that they are a crossbreed between two existing breeds of dog. Buying a cross breed reduces the chance of your pet being afflicted with the various genetic disorders that conventional pure bred dogs are prone to.
This will be a dog that is a mixture of both a Pomeranian and an Australian Shepherd (often referred to as an Aussie). Depending on how your breeder chooses to breed his dogs this could mean that your puppy is the product of two other Pomeranian Australian Shepherd mixes or that your puppy has one Pomeranian parent and one Australian Shepherd parent.
When you buy a purebred dog your puppy will have been bred to strict standards and this means that it's easy to predict things like how big your puppy will grow and what his personality will be like. Because designer dogs inherit different traits from each parent this makes them more difficult to predict. We can only make generalisations about your puppy's future characteristics based on what we know about the two parent breeds of dog.
Pomeranians are usually fairly small dogs. They grow to anywhere between 7 and 12 inches and weigh between about 3 and 7 pounds. Australian Shepherds are much larger than this. They generally grow to between 18 and 23 inches and weigh between 40 and 65 pounds.
In all probability your Cross breed puppy will be somewhere between these two sizes, bigger than a Pomeranian but smaller than an Australian Shepherd. These cross breeds are usually mid-sized animals.
Pomeranians usually have mid length coats that are straight and generally white or cream in colour. Australian Shepherds usually also have mid length hair that is straight, though they tend to be brindled, meaning they have beige to brown markings on a white based coat. Both breeds do shed hair. Your pet will probably have a mid length, straight coat, showing similar markings to those of an Aussie. Pure white cross breeds are rare.
Generally these mixed dogs don't require their coats cutting or styling. They will need regular brushing and shampooing, however. Keep in mind that a this designer breed of dog is probably going to shed a fair amount of hair on furniture, though regular brushing should help with this problem.
Pomeranians are generally loyal, very trainable, affectionate and good watchdogs. Similarly, Australian Shepherds are noted for being trainable, loving, good watchdogs and faithful. Both breeds are noted for being good with children. In all probability your cross breed pet will be as affectionate and trainable as both parent breeds.
These dogs are quite active, and a daily walk is a must. Smaller animals can be walked daily, but crossbreeds that grow bigger, closer to the size of their larger parent, will probably need twice daily walks. Dogs of this designer breed are generally playful and sociable and will not enjoy being left alone for long periods of time.
Pomeranians often suffer from teeth problems, and also show a tendency towards heart issues and kneecap dislocation. Australian Shepherds can sometimes be born deaf, blind or sometimes both, due to the gene mutation that gives their coat its distinctive pattern. Other than that the only other serious health issue they tend to suffer from is cataracts. However, as a crossbreed your dog will be in more robust health than a purebred animal.
These dogs tend not to adapt well to apartment living, but they make great family pets and are good with children. Try visiting a local breeder to find out more about these dogs.
